The world of Faraway subsisted on strip mining of the extensive belts of metamorphosed rock that lined its ancient crust. Besides extensive anthracite coal beds that made up the main export, gem and metal bearing belts permitted the population to make a comfortable living. Most of the population lived in large roving mining platforms that slowly wended their way down the strike of a subsurface ore deposit. Each of these platforms were ten thousand ton, self contained harvesters and processors that excavated, collected, crushed, refined and smelted the ore for eventual export offworld. Platinum group metals, rare earths, copper and silver, and various gemstones made the local population as wealthy as kings. But that wealth attracted the attention of the invading Vargr.
The population was forced into near slavery following the takeover of the world by the Dzarrgh Federate in 1117. The world was thoroughly sacked by the Vargr, and most personal wealth was looted, and the local education and medical infrastructures were destroyed. Miners worked to the point of death by exhaustion to fill the draconian quotas imposed by the occupation government, not all of which were needed for the Federate's war effort. Eventually the mining platforms broke down from want of maintenance and spare parts, and the population had to mine the ore by way of hand laid narrow gauge railroads that radiated out from the starport.
Virus killed the orbiting Vargr governor and his troops in 1139, but the vampires have continued to visit the world for materials necessary for their maintenance and survival. The world's rulers since the Collapse have had to keep the vampires at bay with as much skill and diplomacy as they can muster, while continuing to cajole their people to keep providing enough materials to placate them from raiding in earnest. The current king, Pomar the Unpitful has already shown unusual mettle in dealing with his silicon overlords, but old age is reducing his effectiveness.
