This interesting world features organisms that employ lamarckian evolution - the passing on of acquired traits. More technically, the genetic coding that arose on this world is extremely malleable and interchangable, allowing creatures to modify their own genome easily as well as "borrow" genes from other species they come in contact with.

A being on Lamarck may vary morphologically a great deal over the course of its lifetime: The ideas of "species" and "lineage" are fuzzy to the point of irrelevance here. In essence the entire planet functions as one giant experimental gene pool. Needless to say GenAssist has a heavy presence on Lamarck that dates back thousands of years. Other Lamarckian worlds have since been discovered in the far reaches of the galaxy, but this was the first, and the closest to Sol, and as such has been the most intensively studied. However scientists working here say it continues to yield new wonders almost every year.

More than half of the system's residents do not live on Lamarck I at all (about 90% of the world is a permanent nature reserve), but rather on orbitals or outsystem, where there is a thriving mining industry.
