Rhylanor is best known as the birthplace of Olav hault-Plankwell - Olav I , first of the Emperors of the Flag. As Grand Admiral of the Marches, Olav led the March Fleet against the Outworld Coalition in the First Frontier War. In 604, with a victory in his pocket (and the victorious fleet at his back) he drove on the Imperial core and proclaimed himself Emperor. His fleet gave the Moot no choice but acquiescence. Olav's birthplace on Rhylanor (2716) is currently a minor tourist attraction.
In fact, the Rhylanor subsector, at the opposite end of the Spinward Marches from the Zhodani border, has seen more than its fair share of crucial battles in the Frontier Wars. Zivije (2812) and Jae Tellona (2814) were the sites of the climactic battles where Plankwell destroyed the Zhodani expeditionary fleet. In the Third Frontier War, Porozlo (2715) was taken by the Zhodani and served as their base for the siege of Rhylanor (2716), which became the site of many battles before the siege was ultimately lifted by the end of 981.
Rhylanor Subsector was the site of several battles in the Fifth Frontier War, notably the final turning of the tide at Zivije and Rhylanor itself.
The Rhylanor system still contains relics of the climactic battle, in the form of the Warships' Graveyard, where the shattered hulks of disabled vessels were gathered together by tugs in order to prevent their being a hazard to navigation. The "graveyard fleet" has been augmented by vessels "tidied up" from other interstellar battlefields. Even now, technicians still comb the wrecks, salvaging weaponry and turning up the odd desiccated corpse, thereby solving the mystery of another missing-in-action posting. The whole graveyard is classified as a Red Zone, and patrolled to prevent any but licensed salvage operatives from entering. The area is designated as a war grave by both Zhodani Consulate and Imperial authorities.
Unusually, the Spinward Marches Sector does not have a Naval Depot world like other sectors. Macene is the largets and most important naval base in the sector, and may eventually be expanded to a full Imperial Navy Depot.
The subsector is protected by the 23rd Fleet, based out of Rhylanor, Jae Tellona, Macene, Margesi and Nutema. There are heavy elements of Sector Fleet including several BatRons and CruRons held in reserve at Macene.
The Rhylanor subsector contains 32 worlds with a population of 131.1 billion. The highest population is 10, at Porozlo the highest tech level is 15, at Rhylanor. All but seven of the subsector's 32 worlds are situated on one of two arms of the Spinward Main, and thus accessible by jump-l starships. The subsector thus sees an immense amount of commercial traffic.
