[edit] Hello everyone

I've been thinking about getting involved in this project for some weeks, but not gotten around to it. Today I was browsing and came across a reference that I happened to have the information on readily available. So I clicked on the link and got directed to an edit page... where the first thing I see is an admonition about not posting copyrighted material!

Well, what I had planned to write was pretty much all copyrighted material (to wit, canonical information). I assume it would have been all right to proceed, but really, typing in copyrighted material right above a statement that I'm not to do so seemed a bit thick.

I also assume that the escape clause is the 'without permission' bit. Presumably you have permission. But I've been hunting around for a specific statement to that effect, and can't find it anywhere. It was probably staring me in the face all the time, but allow me to suggest adding a 'note that you do have permission to type in Traveller material subject to the following conditions...' to that admonition?

Anyway, I hope to do a bit of the good work here in the not too distant future.

Hans Rancke-Madsen

Hi Hans, We have permission from Mark to publish "library" information, e.g. anything that would be in the library entries for a module, General background information etc. Also we are covered under fair use for things like low-resuolution images of book covers, and tables of contents/back cover advertising information for books. Dcorrin 15:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hans, just to make you feel better the original permission is posted on the talk page of the [Template talk:Sources|Sources Template], which we use to make sure that the copyrighted information is properly sourced according to the wikia rules.

New question: I noticed that there are duplicate entries about the Aokhalte, one under 'Aokhalte' and one under 'Aokhalte clan'. How do I delete an entire entry? Note: I added some information to the 'Aokhalte' entry, so they're no longer identical. The one to delete is the one labeled 'Aokhalte clan'.

You need admin access to delete a page. I have done so, usually people would create a re-direct page. e.g. #REDIRECT [[Aokhalte]] as the entire text of the page. Dcorrin 12:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] (non)-Canon conflict question

There is a discussion on the Category talk:Canon about how to resolve the problem of conficting articles on the same topic. Please come and offer an opinion as we may need a new policy. Tjoneslo 17:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suggested addition to basic page

I'd like to suggest an addition to the basic page template, namely a tag similar to the 'discussion' tag, but meant for material that is perfectly undisputed, but just not found in public library databases. Something called 'GM information' or 'Referee information' or 'GM/Ref Only'.

As an example, everybody knows that the Darrians somehow caused their sun to flare, but the information about the specific scientific projects involved (and the truth about the Star Trigger) is not public knowledge.

These kind of secrets are not really suitable for discussion pages (IMO). Discussion pages are for such meta-issues as which of several mutually contradictory facts to chose, and why having Tarnis' flares devastate electronics parsecs away doesn't fit with Darrian not being burnt to a crisp.

To this point we've been using "Page Name (GM)" for the GM only information, then linking the to this page from the main page with a "see also [[page (GM)]]" link. The GM pages belong only in the category: GM, leaving the base page in the library and all the other appliciable categories.
One of the difficulties I've had with this is knowing which information to push to the GM category page. Because the library covers several thousand years of history, items which are a mystery in one era are well known facts in another. Other items are never discovered (like the Droyne/Ancients connection).
If you have a better suggestion, post it.
Tjoneslo 03:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
I know that's how you've been doing it. I tried it myself with Imperiallines. I thought it would have been easier and more intuitive if I could have just added a GM info page directly from the relevant page.
As for the difficulty you mention, I agree. It is a problem. I think the best solution would be to have a library data page for each relevant period and then, if necessary, a GM only page linked to each LD page. So you might, for instance, have a page called 'Nugiiri (IW)' with all the information about the Nugiiri from Interstellar Wars. And linked to that a GM only page that says "The Nugiiri are actually Droyne, etc.". Then you'd have a page called 'Nugiiri' (I suggest that the default should be the Classic Era just before the OTU/GTU change point, i.e. around 1116) which just says "Old name for the Droyne of [World]".

[edit] Wikia Blogs

This wiki is included in our new Wikia Blogs feature. To get involved, just add snippets of this wiki's best articles to MediaWiki:Blog snippet each day and that content will appear on the Wikia Gaming Blog. Please see Wiki to blog for an introduction and Wikia Blogs for a list of wikis involved in this. Angela talk 15:47, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] What's with the new look and editing?

I was editing the Efate Run and clicked the preview button. Now I can't seem to get back to the raw text that I was editing. When I try, I'm told that if I leave without saving, I'll lose the changes I've made. But I don't want to save just yet; I want to edit some more first. A preview isn't much good if you can't do that, is it? Rancke 12:57, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I just tried editing the efate run page, and tried preview, and everything looked normal to me... Worked fine previewing this edit too. Dcorrin 13:07, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, after looking all over the page I found the button in the toolbar to get me back to the text. I'm used to just pressing the 'back' arrow of the window navigation panel. Rancke 13:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How about a template for UWP information in readable form?

I'm relatively new to Traveller (GURPS Traveller is my first real experience) and as such, I'm unable to read UWP (and similar short formats) in a single glance. This kind of short format is excellent when you need to detail an entire sector on a single page of paper, but for a wiki it would be much more sensible to have a simple template with that very same information in a readable format. Mcv 13:21, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestion. I've added it to our Projects page. It may take a little setup to get that to work as expected. Tjoneslo

[edit] Main page Special Projects

The Special Project for this month was my way of updating the front page of the wiki every once in a while, to make sure new visitors didn't think it was abandoned. Usually I just pick something at random from the Projects page, or that strikes my fancy. Below is the list of previous selections. This is a request for suggestions.

Update: List has been moved to Special Project talk page. Tjoneslo 14:19, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I feel all special for effectively being the new Special Project. I will state that everyone can help: I'm only human, and I know there's got to be errors hidden in my maps. So I'd appreciate it if people can proof them, and we can get any errors fixed. --Rindis 17:59, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Milestone reached!

According the the statistics on the front page, we've just surpassed 5000 articles in the Wiki. This makes us a gold star large wiki. Today is a celebration day! Tjoneslo 14:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Hiver makes Its Mark! :D

According to the "Top Content" box on the right of the page, my article on "Lost" Traveller books is one of the most highly visisted, most popular and highly rated articles! W00T! <Hiver...Hiver...Hiver...> Gruffty 20:10, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Let me scrape you off that ceiling... I think that the Top Content list is just an alphabetic sort of articles (or I'll let you manipulate me into believing that more people need to know the definition of !xeng'ri). --Sstefan 20:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
We don't seem to have any traffic information - I don't know why. The rating system works though. Dcorrin 22:41, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
The traffic information seems a little vague. I know the general page views information is turned off because Wikia uses several cache servers to handle the load (and thus can't count page views accurately). If you really want to know, go ask on the wikia watercooler forum. Tjoneslo 13:34, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Bah. Thought there had to be another reason for it, other than my article :( Gruffty 23:52, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Upgraded Wiki Version

This should have no impact on anyone or anything. Wikia (our host) has just finished upgrading our wiki software to version 1.12. If you notice any weirdness with the pages, post a note here or on the Wikia forums. Tjoneslo 18:01, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

So what is new in version 1.12? Dcorrin 19:10, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Monaco skin

Hullo! I am Kirkburn, your friendly local Wikia Gaming Helper!

I've just set your site to default to a Monaco skin (sapphire in this case) - this is the new Wikia default skin, and is now the main actively developed Wikia platform. As a sucessor to Quartz, it comes with even more customizability - you can find out more on w:c:inside:Monaco Skin Customization, where you can also find out info about the widgets available.

An admin can set the default site skin via the skin section on Special:Preferences, or by editing MediaWiki:AdminSkin. If users wish to see another skin than the default, they can untick "See custom wiki skins (recommended)" on the same page. Kirkburn (talk) 19:12, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I liked the new look when I logged in this morning. It appears to give a better overview on my laptop; now to see what it will look like from the desktop at work....--Sstefan 13:52, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikia Gaming IRC channel

Hullo! I am Kirkburn, your friendly local Wikia Gaming Helper!

You may be interested to know there is a Wikia gaming IRC channel, #wikia-gaming on chat.freenode.net, where you can hop on, ask for help from users of other gaming wikis, or offer your own experiences. If you are not familiar with IRC clients, you can access it from http://irc.wikia.com/gaming.

Different people may be on sporadically, but we organize weekly chats at a fixed time so we can get the most number of people online at the same time to ask and answer questions, or just to hang out. The admins of some of Wikia's biggest gaming wikis (e.g. WoW, Halo) often attend them. You can find the time for the next chat by following this link.
