Vanguard Reaches sector, known as Steblenzh in the Zhodani Consulate. The Vanguard Reach is a remote nowhere. In the antebellum period it was too far from any of the major powers. It was peripheral even to the Frontier Wars: Zhodani and Imperial military planners steadfastly refused to waste ships and resources in trying to influence the sector. Much of this disinterest was due to the sector's unusually low stellar density. Most of the sector's worlds and civilizations are in the four coreward most subsectors, or along the Beyond interface. The further one goes away from those regions, the fewer and farther between habitable worlds become, until one reaches the Helix Rift in the lower spinward-rimward quarter.
Needless to say, this scattering discouraged much development or political organization within the heart of the subsector. The remoteness of many worlds attracted many fringe religions and cults to settle here, as well as political refugees and just plain rednecks, none of whom had anything common with each other than a shared desire to be left alone. Aside from the Colonade Administration District (CAD) and the Corellians at the flanks, the sector was an impoverished frontier of no consequence, no prospects and no value.
All of this changed with the Collapse. The new Regency needed to foster trade and development to maintain the Quarantine, and foster civilization against future regression. The development of the jump-2 route known variously as the Gold Road or the Mortal Coil soon brought Regency and Corellian traders. The Aslan, already having a tenuous foothold in the rim interface, intensified trade with the Arcturan Commonwealth and the CAD. The sector's resources, once too far away to be of value, were priceless. Planets that the inhabitants wouldn't waste their time to fight over became the bloody battlegrounds of rival powers and their advanced military forces. The local rednecks suddenly found themselves popular, newly rich and coveted by previously disinterested outsiders.
The sector is noteworthy for its two exotic minor alien races, the Eslyat and the Murians.
The main powers contending for the sector are the Corellians, the Murians, the Aslan (especially the Aokhalte bloc) and a number of independent organizations like the Enterprise and the Beggars' Crusade.
- The Corellians are mostly interested in reaping the rich trade that wends its way through the sector en route to either Beyond and the Regency, the CAD or the Aslan.
- The Murians are just plain furious with the presence of the Aslan, and have been building up their military for a possible confrontation over their mutual borders.
- The Aslan are led by the Aokhalte, who have made the region their main power center. Their advances have been slowed considerably by their wars in neighboring sectors, and by the aggressiveness of the Seieakh bloc.
- The Enterprise is a criminal syndicate network in Beyond sector centered on the Federation of Garrone.
- The Beggars' Crusade is a bizarre and secretive psuedoreligious order found on many of the Reache's non-aligned worlds, where their members pursue arcane agendas known only to the Crusade's inner sanctum.
Piracy is still endemic to many regions, many of them privateers in the secret employ of various states, and petty territorial wars rage on some of the more remote worlds. Vanguard Reaches is the only sector in the entire Extents where minor mercenaries and soldier-adventurers still have the means and the opportunities to carve out their own personal empires without the possibilities of major opposition or interference by outside powers.
